SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, June 29, 2022The Open Source FPGA Foundation (OSFPGA), an open standard collaborator of free and open-source tools enabling fast prototyping for FPGA chips and automated EDA support, today announced the appointment of Tony McDowell to CEO.

Tony is an industry veteran and open source advocate with nearly 20 years of experience in embedded systems and FPGA architecture. In addition to his new role as CEO at the OSFPGA Foundation, Tony serves as the director of open source for Rapid Silicon, a provider of AI-enabled application-specific FPGAs based on open-source technology. He also worked for almost 15 years at Xilinx where he most recently served on the Embedded Software Technical Marketing team. Prior to that, Tony served on Xilinx’s support team for the Zynq family of SoCs and was also part of the company’s Worldwide Technical Support organization where he collaborated with customers troubleshooting the Xilinx ISE toolchain. Tony is an accomplished public speaker and strong supporter of education. He has spent countless hours volunteer teaching in Colorado’s public schools both independently and through Junior Achievement USA. He earned a bachelor’s degree in computer engineering at Mississippi State University and is a certified ISO 26262 Functional Safety Engineer, Level 1.

“Over the past decade, we’ve seen the growing trend of democratization of embedded systems thanks to the power of open source technology and community,” said Tony McDowell, CEO of the OSFPGA Foundation. “Now we are on the cusp of the same happening to the world of FPGA design. I am humbled to be part of such a trailblazing organization that will lead the way in making things better for the entire industry.”

“We’re honored to have Tony serve as CEO,” said Dr. Naveed Sherwani, co-chairman and board member of the OSFPGA Foundation. “He has spent the majority of his career serving as a strong advocate for open standards and industry collaboration. His passion will help lead the OSFPGA, and the industry as a whole, as we work together to democratize silicon and drive the industry forward.”
